GASPAR CLAUS & CASPER CLAUSEN
A collaboration between cellist Gaspar Claus (FR) and vocalist Casper Clausen (DK). Yes, the duo’s names are strikingly alike and were the main inspiration for their first meeting in Lisbon, where they immediately recorded their debut album, self-titled “Claus & Clausen” in 2016. Their mutual friend, French filmmaker Vincent Moon, was their matchmaker. He had known them both for years and thought they would make an exciting match on stage. The album captures that initial first meeting through a collection of songs ranging from their first conversations, raw improvisations, to full-fledged songs. French cellist Gaspar Claus’s playing is a sonic grind, with his characteristic ghostlike tone often wandering off near the bridge of his instrument, sometimes mixing in prepared objects and never shy off tender melodies or explosive gestures. He has played and collaborated with a wide range of exciting artists such as Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino, Barbara Carlotti, Joelle Léandre, Matt Elliot, and frequently collaborates with his father,Pedro Soler, a respected French flamenco guitarist. Gaspar Claus also founded and runs the record label “Les Disques du Festival Permanent.” Danish vocalist Casper Clausen is best known as the lead singer and founding member of acclaimed Danish band Efterklang and the adjacent project Liima. His distinct baritone voice reaches wide from angelic falsetto to full-bodied wooden depths. In 2021, Casper released his first solo album, “Better Way” via German label City Slang. Together they create an exciting raw blend of cello and vocals, showcasing their shared curiosity for improvisations, high-flying melodies, and heart-searching narratives. In a live performance, the cello and voice literally face each other, with the duo often performing on the floor surrounded by the audience, creating an intimate and sensitive experience for everyone in attendance. Gaspar Claus & Casper Clausen’s live performance promises to be a unique and unforgettable experience that you won’t want to miss.
